LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR HOME

Request a free solar installation quote in Edinburgh

Tell us your postcode and what you want to install. SunBru checks coverage for your address and contacts you about the next step.

Add a question or best time to call (optional)
SunBru reviews your request first. If we assign an installer, they can see your details and contact you.

Start with the roof you can actually use

A house with its own roof

Ask the surveyor to assess usable roof area, condition, shading, orientation and safe access. Compare the proposed panel layout and cable route, not just the number of panels. Roof repairs or difficult access should be identified before you accept a price.

A flat or tenement with a shared roof

Do not assume owning the top-floor flat gives you sole use of the roof. Check title deeds and discuss the proposal with fellow owners or your factor before committing. Ask who would own the system, which electricity meter it would serve and how maintenance access would work.

Edinburgh Council: shared property guidance ↗

The council resource explains shared-property responsibilities; it is not approval for a solar installation. SunBru’s household calculator does not model a communal multi-flat electricity scheme.

Check Edinburgh’s conservation and listed-building guidance

Use the council’s map to check whether your property is listed or within a conservation area. Then ask the council what applies to the proposed installation. Panel position, visibility and the building’s character can affect the assessment; a neighbour’s installation does not establish permission for yours.

Before paying a deposit, ask the installer to identify any required planning permission, listed-building consent or building warrant, who will obtain it and whether related costs are included.

Solar with a battery, or a battery for existing panels?

For a new installation, compare the solar-only and solar-plus-battery examples above. Ask for usable storage in kWh and charging/discharging power in kW, plus the proposed location and any included backup capability. Size the battery around electricity use rather than assuming the largest option offers the best return.

If you already have panels, record the inverter model and ask whether the proposed battery needs a replacement inverter or can work alongside it. Request a separate written retrofit quotation. The calculator’s new-installation price is not a battery-retrofit or grid-only storage quotation.

Compare Edinburgh quotations on the same basis

  1. System: panel capacity in kWp, inverter model, usable battery capacity and any export limit.
  2. Work: scaffolding, roof work, cable routes, electrical upgrades and responsibility for approvals or network paperwork.
  3. Money: itemised total, exclusions, payment stages and assumptions behind projected savings.
  4. After installation: certification, warranty terms, monitoring access and who handles faults.

SunBru uses one transparent planning model across Scotland. It does not apply an Edinburgh price premium or guarantee Edinburgh-specific generation. Ask each installer for a roof-specific forecast and compare the electricity-use and tariff assumptions.

Solar in City of Edinburgh: the recorded picture

The DESNZ snapshot records 10,985 solar PV sites in City of Edinburgh at the end of 2025, compared with 9,611 in its revised 2024 series.

The figures include homes, businesses and larger sites. They do not show household adoption, local installer prices or what your roof will generate.

Edinburgh is not the whole Lothians

The council statistics cover City of Edinburgh only. Some installers also publish East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian coverage; those are separate council areas. Confirm the property’s exact postcode and survey availability before making a shortlist decision.
