Warm Homes Loan in Scotland for solar panels and batteries

Check what you can borrow for, how to apply and how to get a written installation quote.

Can I get a solar panel grant in Scotland?

The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme excludes standard solar panels and home batteries. If you own a residential property in Scotland, the UK Warm Homes Loan Scheme is now open for both. You repay what you borrow.

How do I get a Warm Homes Loan?

  1. Check the project. Solar PV, battery storage or both can qualify. Solar and battery work usually requires an MCS-certified installer. Check the official eligibility rules.
  2. Get an itemised installation quote. Ask for the panel output, usable battery capacity and any scaffolding or electrical work. Use the total installed price when comparing finance.
  3. Apply with a participating lender. The lender sets the terms and checks credit and affordability. Compare the interest rate, repayment period and total amount repayable. See how to apply on GOV.UK.

Request a solar or battery installation quote

Already have a price? Check your written quote. Still budgeting? Estimate your system cost.

SunBru handles installation enquiries. Loan applications and lending decisions sit with the lender. See the separate Home Energy Scotland scheme.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR HOME

Request an installation quote

Tell us what you want to install and where. SunBru will review your request and contact you about the installation. This form does not apply for credit.

Add a question or best time to call (optional)
SunBru reviews your request first. If we assign an installer, they can see your details and contact you.

Grant: eligible heating and insulation

Home Energy Scotland lists grants of up to £7,500 for eligible heat pumps, with an optional loan separately. It also supports eligible insulation measures. These are not solar or battery grants. Eligible applicants must own and live in an existing Scottish home as their main residence; benefits are not required. Full conditions and available budget still apply.

Other Home Energy Scotland loans

An interest-free loan is not a grant. Home Energy Scotland loans require credit and affordability checks and carry a 1.5% administration fee, capped at £150. Solar thermal and hybrid PV-T have separate eligible loan entries; PV-T is not ordinary solar PV plus a battery.

VAT relief: not a cash payment

HMRC currently provides 0% VAT for qualifying residential solar and electrical battery installations until 31 March 2027, with 5% scheduled from 1 April 2027. Qualifying battery retrofits and standalone installations are included. Equipment bought without installation is treated differently. Ask the supplier to confirm VAT on your complete written quote; do not deduct a further 20% from a price that already includes the relief.

Export income: paid after generation

The Smart Export Guarantee pays eligible generators for metered electricity exported to the grid. It is not an installation grant. Supplier rates, terms and eligibility vary; use your actual proposed export rate in the calculator.

What about “free solar”, older offers or schemes elsewhere?

Warmer Homes Scotland offers assessed support for eligible households with heating and insulation improvements. Contact Home Energy Scotland to establish your household’s eligibility and the measures offered; do not assume it provides a solar or battery package.

Check Warmer Homes Scotland. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies to England and Wales, not Scottish properties. Older solar-loan figures are not proof of a current offer. This guide does not verify an ECO, local council or newly announced programme for your address.

Where to get independent funding advice

Ask Home Energy Scotland for free advice before buying an assessment solely for funding. For its Grant and Loan scheme, do not start work before receiving the written funding offer. Funding is reserved at the offer stage, not when you apply. SunBru does not award funding or submit applications for you.

SunBru’s solar calculator does not deduct grants or establish funding eligibility. Its prices are planning assumptions; final scope, tax treatment and total price need confirmation before booking. Check linked official terms again before committing.

Keep your handover pack

Ask for the documents relevant to your installation: certificates, grid paperwork, design, warranties and user manuals. Keep copies somewhere you can access after installation.
