How to compare solar panel quotes

Check one quote at a time. Compare what each installer includes before judging a price difference.

Before accepting, ask each installer

  • Does the written total include VAT, scaffolding, electrical upgrades, grid paperwork and commissioning?
  • What are the exact panel, inverter and battery models, usable battery capacity and written warranty terms?
  • Which roof, electricity-use, import/export tariff and battery assumptions support the savings and payback?
  • What is excluded, who handles aftercare and when could extra charges arise?

How SunBru checks your quote

We estimate the cost of new solar panels and a battery from the sizes you enter. The estimate excludes extras such as roof or electrical work. Ask the installer to itemise those costs.

See the calculation and assumptions

Illustrative SunBru planning model v3 for a straightforward new installation. The solar estimate includes a £450 site allowance plus £900/kWp for the first 3 kWp, £800/kWp for the next 3 kWp and £650/kWp above 6 kWp. Each rate applies only to that portion. A battery fitted with new solar adds £450/kWh. Roof access, scaffolding, slate, split arrays and electrical upgrades can increase the price. The installer confirms equipment, scope and final price after survey.

Use the same battery capacity basis on both quotes (nominal or usable). This is a planning model. It uses no live installer prices or property survey.

A LOCAL BUYING QUESTION

Comparing solar quotes for an east/west roof in Fife?

Ask each installer to price the same roof layout first. A one-slope proposal and a two-slope proposal can have different panel counts, access costs and generation assumptions. Comparing only the total price can hide those differences.

DESNZ’s September 2026 release records 13,761 solar PV sites in Fife at the end of 2025, compared with 12,438 in its revised 2024 series. These include homes, businesses and larger sites. They do not measure local prices, roof suitability or household savings. Explore Fife’s official figures and source notes →

Request two clearly labelled options

A scope checklist for your own proposals, not a suggested installation design.
Ask forWhy it helps you compare
One roof slope versus both slopesPanel quantity, wattage and total kWp for each option, with the layout drawn.
Generation for each roof directionAsk for location, pitch and shading inputs, plus monthly output where available. A generic south-facing estimate is not your east/west design.
Inverter and roof connectionsAsk how panels on different roof directions are connected and whether the proposed inverter supports that layout. A panel count alone cannot establish compatibility.
Matching battery and extrasKeep usable battery capacity, backup equipment, scaffolding, roof repairs and electrical work consistent—or ask for each difference to be itemised.
Household use and export assumptionsAsk for the same electricity use and tariffs in both proposals, with battery benefit shown separately from solar benefit.

Energy Saving Trust explains that east- and west-facing roofs can work, with orientation and shade affecting generation. Your installer still needs to assess your property. SunBru’s calculator uses simplified annual assumptions; it does not design roof strings or simulate separate slopes hour by hour.

Enter each written quote in the checker above and keep its result before checking the next. The checker handles one proposal at a time and is not an installer quality verdict. After seeing a result, you can choose to send its details to SunBru for review without an account.

My solar quote mentions an export limit. What should I check?

An export limit controls power sent to the electricity network. It is different from your panels’ combined kWp and from the annual electricity figure in kWh. Do not assume a larger panel array can export its full output at every moment.

  1. Ask for the proposed inverter rating, total generation/storage arrangement and agreed export limit in writing.
  2. Ask who handles the network application or notification, which approvals are still outstanding and whether the quote includes associated charges.
  3. Ask whether the generation, export income and payback forecast accounts for the proposed limit. SunBru’s annual calculator does not simulate export limiting or inverter clipping.
  4. Keep the network response and commissioning documents with your installation records.

Your installer should confirm the correct connection route for your actual system. These official guides explain the process: SP Energy Networks export limitation and SSEN generation connections. Checked 6 October 2026.
