Adjust tariffs & calculation assumptions

These are editable planning assumptions, not a tariff offer or site survey. South-facing output is adjusted to 85% for east/west and 60% for north; some/heavy shade reduces output to 85%/65%. Direct use is capped at 35% of demand and 40% of generation. Battery modelling allows 220 cycles/year and 90% efficiency, capped by remaining demand.

25-year figures assume constant tariffs, 0.5% annual panel degradation and battery replacement in year 10 at 80% of its initial cost. They exclude financing, maintenance and inverter replacement. Optional extras add cost only. Bedroom-based sizes are starting points, not a roof design.

Illustrative SunBru planning model v3 for a straightforward new installation. The solar estimate includes a £450 site allowance plus £900/kWp for the first 3 kWp, £800/kWp for the next 3 kWp and £650/kWp above 6 kWp. Each rate applies only to that portion. A battery fitted with new solar adds £450/kWh. Roof access, scaffolding, slate, split arrays and electrical upgrades can increase the price. The installer confirms equipment, scope and final price after survey.

Payback is the first year after which the model stays above break-even through year 25, including the year-ten battery replacement. It is not a guarantee.

With these settings, the battery option has a lower modelled 25-year net benefit than solar only. More storage does not automatically mean better value.

Your current plan: 5 kWh battery. Selecting an option updates the calculator and your enquiry setup. Use the share or download controls below to keep a copy.

The battery model includes a £1,800 replacement in year ten. Both options include any extras you selected. Benefits combine avoided electricity purchases and export income; these are planning estimates, not quotes or guaranteed savings. Finance, maintenance and inverter replacement are excluded. Actual performance and replacement timing vary.

How much does a solar battery cost in Scotland?

For a battery fitted with new solar, SunBru currently models £450 per kWh, or £2,250 for 5 kWh. This is our planning allowance, not a market average or a battery-only installation quote. Ask for an itemised installed price, including any inverter, electrical work and commissioning.

5 kWh£2,250£116
10 kWh£4,500£231
15 kWh£6,750£265

Is the extra storage worth it?

Compare the extra benefit with the extra cost, rather than assigning all solar savings to the battery. SunBru limits stored solar by generation and household demand, allows 10% storage losses and assumes a replacement in year ten. A larger battery may add cost without adding useful savings.

What about cheap overnight charging?

This calculator models stored solar only, not overnight grid charging or time-of-use optimisation. Entering a cheap night rate as your whole-day import rate will not model that strategy. Ask for a separate calculation including charging costs, losses and the electricity it replaces.

What should the written quote include?

Compare the exact battery and inverter, usable kWh, installation scope, warranty and exclusions. Ask whether backup power is included rather than assuming it is. Final scope and total price must be confirmed before booking.

Questions based on your settings

  1. Can you provide itemised quotes for the same 4.5 kWp solar system, both without a battery and with a 5 kWh battery, showing all inclusions and exclusions?
  2. How does your generation and self-use estimate account for my south roof, little / none shading and 3,500 kWh annual electricity use?
  3. The SunBru model gives the battery option a lower 25-year net benefit. What assumptions would make the battery worthwhile for my home?
  4. What are the exact panel, inverter and battery models, the usable battery capacity, and the written warranty limits?
  5. Does this exact installation supply electricity during a power cut? If so, which circuits and what extra equipment or costs are involved?
  6. What replacement, maintenance, installation and handover costs are included or excluded? Please confirm payment terms and who handles aftercare.

A BUDGET STARTING POINT

How much could solar panels cost in Scotland?

In SunBru’s planning model, a 4 kWp system is £3,950 for solar only, or £6,200 with a 5 kWh battery, before optional extras. These examples use the calculator’s existing formula—not a survey of Scottish installer prices, live offers or guaranteed installed prices.

3 kWp£3,150£5,400
4 kWp£3,950£6,200
6 kWp£5,550£7,800

Trying an example changes only your panel and battery sizes. Your roof, electricity-use, tariff and extras settings stay as entered, so your resulting total may include those extras. These examples are not a battery-only retrofit price.

What is behind these guide prices?

Illustrative SunBru planning model v3 for a straightforward new installation. The solar estimate includes a £450 site allowance plus £900/kWp for the first 3 kWp, £800/kWp for the next 3 kWp and £650/kWp above 6 kWp. Each rate applies only to that portion. A battery fitted with new solar adds £450/kWh. Roof access, scaffolding, slate, split arrays and electrical upgrades can increase the price. The installer confirms equipment, scope and final price after survey.

Roof access, scaffolding requirements, electrical upgrades, exact equipment, warranties and tax treatment need checking in the installer’s written scope. Final scope and total price are confirmed before booking.

What size solar system do I need?

Start with annual electricity use in kWh from your bill, then consider usable roof space, shading and when you use power. Bedroom count is only a starting point. Ask an installer for a roof layout and site-specific generation estimate before choosing equipment.

Adjust your home and roof assumptions

Is a battery worth the extra cost?

Compare the extra cost with the extra benefit—not the whole system’s savings. Storing energy can reduce exports as well as grid purchases. SunBru’s existing comparison shows the difference, including its assumed battery replacement.

Compare solar only with a battery

Will solar pay back on my roof?

Your estimate depends on generation, electricity use and import/export rates. Try lower yield or less favourable rates before deciding. The model does not simulate hourly weather, time-of-use charging or future tariff changes.

Test the calculation assumptions

Already have a written quote?

Compare the total payable, exact models, usable battery capacity and exclusions. A difference from SunBru’s model is a reason to ask questions; it is not proof that an installer is expensive or poor quality.
